NEW «SAN GIULIANO» GENERAL HOSPITAL

BUILDING SERVICES FOR THE NEW HOSPITAL IN CAMPANIA

NEW «SAN GIULIANO» GENERAL HOSPITAL

The project

The new hospital in Giugliano in Campania features advanced architectural and building services solutions designed to maximise energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Vertical building forms protect the façades from excessive solar gain and create a harmonious connection between the different areas. A metal roof incorporating a photovoltaic system spans the hospital, protecting the services plant rooms while generating electricity from renewable energy. The hospital will be classified as an NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building), meaning that its energy demand will be close to zero. The building envelope and services design are key to achieving this objective, with particular attention to sustainability and energy saving. The hospital demonstrates how technology and sustainability can work together to improve healthcare quality, reduce environmental impact and optimise operational efficiency.

Building services design

The new hospital’s building services are designed to deliver high functionality and energy efficiency. Winter and summer air conditioning and domestic hot water (DHW) production are provided by compression heat pumps using renewable energy from the outside air. Controlled mechanical ventilation ensures a continuous supply of fresh air, improving control of the indoor environment and reducing energy waste. Rainwater harvesting and reuse will also support sustainable water management. The electrical system incorporates redundancy to ensure continuity and safety: the main supply is at medium voltage, backed by generators and uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) for emergency and uninterrupted power. Distribution is divided into normal, essential and uninterrupted supplies, while LED lighting is controlled by motion sensors to optimise consumption. The centralised data network uses fibre-optic and UTP cables, with UPS-backed power to provide continuous, secure connectivity throughout the facility.
