THE NEW HOSPITAL IN MALTA

INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT OF HEALTH CARE S. IOANEES PAULUS II

The project

Saint Joannes Paulus II is a new hospital complex forming part of the Smart City urban development in Malta, conceived as a meeting point between the business cultures of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. It aims to become a leading centre for medical tourism in the Mediterranean, focusing on orthopaedics, sports medicine and neurology. A 3,000 m² sports medicine centre will attract athletes, alongside health education and research services, including innovative laboratories. With 200 rooms, the facility will be designed around energy efficiency and sustainability, incorporating advanced surgical and diagnostic technologies. The architectural design of Saint Joannes Paulus II combines functionality, energy efficiency and sustainability, with particular attention to the comfort of users and staff. The facility integrates innovative solutions such as photovoltaic panels, a green roof and dedicated rehabilitation areas to create a welcoming environment with advanced medical and technological capabilities.

Building services design

The new St. John Paul II Hospital in Malta was conceived with advanced building services to ensure efficient, sustainable energy use. The design fully supported the national energy policy of improving efficiency and reducing dependence on fossil fuels, incorporating innovative solutions such as photovoltaic, small-scale wind and geothermal systems. The work covered electrical, air conditioning, water and sanitary, irrigation and fire protection systems, with particular emphasis on renewable energy generation. The project included a solar photovoltaic installation with a total capacity of approximately 475 kWp and a small-scale wind installation with a total capacity of approximately 390 kWp. This approach will reduce demand for conventional energy and contribute significantly to environmental sustainability, supporting the reduction of fossil-fuel dependence and improving the facility’s overall energy efficiency.
